Application firewalls address the application layer by enforcing requests within application sessions accessed through the Internet. An application firewall specifically protects the Web application communication stream and all associated application resources from attacks that use a Web protocol.
Application firewalls address browser and HTTP attacks that attempt manipulate application behavior for malicious purposes. These include data attacks, which use special characters, wild cards or known application vulnerabilities to change data; logic content attacks, which go after command strings or logic statements; and target attacks, that focus on accounts, files or hosts.
Application firewalls are used in addition to traditional firewalls that address network access and are an important defense for an organizations critical applications.
