Potential Cyberattacks Against American Businesses

Biden discusses cybersecurity solutions and IT support at the business roundtable.

Cyberattacks against American businesses and critical infrastructure are a growing concern as the United States increasingly relies on technology and the internet. These attacks can come in many forms, from simple phishing scams to sophisticated malware campaigns. They can have serious consequences for both the businesses and individuals affected by them.

By now, you have heard about the Russian military activity in Ukraine and associated political tensions worldwide. The U.S. Government has published multiple warnings  of potential cyberattacks against American businesses and critical infrastructure associated with the events in Ukraine. The ZZ Servers family also asks for everyone’s vigilance to guard against potential cybersecurity threats to your company and employees.

The U.S. Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) states the following on its website:

“CISA recommends all organizations—regardless of size—adopt a heightened posture when it comes to cybersecurity and protecting their most critical assets. Recognizing that many organizations find it challenging to identify resources for urgent security improvements, we’ve compiled free cybersecurity services and tools from government partners, and industry to assist along with our Shields Up Technical Guidance.”

A ransomware attack is a potential cyberattack to target American businesses. Ransomware is malicious software that encrypts a victim’s files, making them inaccessible until a ransom is paid to the attackers. Ransomware attacks can devastate businesses, resulting in the loss of sensitive data and disrupting operations.

To help mitigate phishing attacks at your company, I recommend continuous training for all staff that uses a network-connected computing device. In addition, constant contact from leadership can go a long way in supporting your human firewall. The following template can be used to email your staff about the importance of keeping vigilant when reading emails:

By now, I am sure you have heard about the Russian military activity in Ukraine and associated political tensions worldwide.

As this conflict continues, the U.S. Government has published multiple warnings of increased cybersecurity threats to American businesses. I ask for your help to prevent email “phishing” attacks on the company.  Please be vigilant and consider the following three things for each email you receive.

  • Do not click on any link or open any attachment in any email unless you are sure it came from someone you know personally.
  • Do not respond to any texts or mobile phone prompts unless they are expected.
  • Mistakes happen. If you do any of these things, let me know immediately – you could stop a cyber-attack on the company!

People are our most vital and our first line of defense. Thank you for doing your part to keep the criminals out of our computer systems and our company.

Please contact [your support contact] if you have questions or concerns.

To protect against these potential cyber threats, businesses should implement robust cybersecurity measures such as regularly updating and using antivirus software and educating employees on how to spot and avoid scams and attacks.
