A Cybersecurity Wake-Up Call: Xerox Business Solutions Hacked

Just recently, Xerox Corporation revealed that its U.S. division of Xerox Business Solutions (XBS) fell victim to a cyberattack. This breach may have exposed a limited amount of personal information, making it a crucial reminder for U.S. business owners to take cybersecurity seriously.

What does XBS do?

XBS is a company that specializes in document technology and services, offering a variety of products such as printers, copiers, and digital printing systems, along with consultation and supply services.

Details of the Attack

On December 29, the INC Ransom ransomware gang claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that they had stolen sensitive data and confidential documents from XBS’s systems. They even went as far as listing the corporation on their extortion portal. We reached out to Xerox, and they confirmed the security incident in a statement.

“Recently, Xerox’s subsidiary, Xerox Business Solutions, experienced a cybersecurity incident which was detected and contained by Xerox cybersecurity personnel,” Xerox said. “The event was limited to XBS U.S. We are actively working with third-party cybersecurity experts to conduct a thorough investigation into this incident and are taking necessary steps to further secure the XBS IT environment.”

What’s at Risk?

Xerox maintains that neither their operations nor those of XBS were impacted by the attack. However, their initial investigation indicated that some personal information was exposed. Data shared by INC Ransom on their leak site included email communications, payment details, invoices, and purchase orders.

While the full extent of the breach is still unclear, it’s possible that the attackers hold data on multiple XBS clients, partners, and employees. Xerox has promised to notify all affected individuals once they confirm the extent of the incident.

A Glimmer of Hope?

Interestingly, we noticed that Xerox’s entry on INC Ransom’s leak portal was removed for unknown reasons. This could be an indication that negotiations between Xerox and the attackers are ongoing. It’s worth noting that Xerox also faced a ransomware attack in 2020 when the Maze ransomware group threatened to publish over 100GB of stolen data.
