Coworking Space IT Risks – Secure Your Startup’s Infrastructure Now

Coworking space makes it easier than ever to run a startup. Cheap web technologies, cloud infrastructure, and coworking spaces have given startups more options for affordable workspaces. These shared spaces provide convenient solutions for small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to easily scale up or down without having to scramble for new office space.

One of the most significant benefits is that coworking spaces take care of IT needs like internet access and security, allowing startups to focus on their core business rather than operations or infrastructure. However, as tempting as it might sound, you should approach using IT services at coworking spaces with caution. Let me tell you why.

WeWork

Wework provides a good example of coworking space it risks
WeWork sign on shared coworking space. The We Company is an American commercial real estate company that provides shared workspaces for technology startups – San Francisco, California, USA – 2019

You may have heard of WeWork – a giant in the coworking industry that has recently faced some controversies. While most headlines focus on its canceled IPO and former CEO’s behavior, WeWork has also struggled with IT infrastructure issues since its inception:

  • An inexperienced and unqualified director of IT was initially hired
  • Prioritizing cost over quality – using out-of-date devices and hiring inexperienced contractors for installation
  • Lack of centralized IT procedures – regional managers made their own rules!
  • Leasing buildings with outdated technology that needed replacement

One major issue WeWork had was its weak, unsecured network. They used WPA2 Personal networks (essentially home WiFi) for all their 500+ locations worldwide, all with the same easy-to-guess password. This made it extremely easy for a hacker to set up a fake WeWork network and monitor anyone connected to the network.

Despite WeWork’s plans to upgrade its IT in the next year, the company’s current situation makes that questionable.

The Risks of Relying on Coworking Space IT

The cost of not having control over your IT is much higher than any money you might save by letting a coworking space manage it for you. If you’re considering running your startup out of a coworking space, be sure to get answers to these questions:

  • Do they create unique passwords and credentials for each member?
  • Are tenants allowed to use VPNs? If so, is that only for members renting offices or anyone (e.g., remote employees or freelancers)?
  • Is the building fitted to handle modern networking equipment?
  • How do they ensure that only members and authorized visitors have access?

When Should Your Businesses Start Thinking About IT?

The short answer is immediately. As soon as you start running a business, you’ll likely use applications requiring security services to protect your data. It’s much easier to invest in IT when your organization is smaller than when you have more employees and rely on additional software and hardware.

I believe startups should incorporate IT best practices from day one. I understand not every startup can afford a CIO or IT director right away; however, solutions are available for startups at any stage of their IT journey.
