A man is using a laptop for network management.

Irony. A state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result.

When you think about it, isn’t it ironic that we spend a great deal of money on expensive bags, covers and screen protectors to protect the OUTSIDE of our computer devices when the real threat comes from the INSIDE?

There’s no need to want to cry about it (see what we did there…if not you will if you read on). Just take action.

Since early May, hundreds of thousands of machines have been infected by the WannaCry ransomware. Hitting Europe and the US hard, this ransomware cyber attack caused a large number of businesses and their customers to get locked out of the data stored on their computers. Victims had to then decide between paying the ransom that escalated each day, or lose everything.

Among the targets were companies and organizations like hospitals, banks and schools where saying “no” to the ransomware demand would cripple their operations. They had no choice but to pay up.

The attack propagated through file sharing devices connected to large networks, and those largely running Microsoft Windows, meaning that if just one member’s computer was not updated with the latest security patches, it could ruin it for the whole company or organization.

Why do we bring this up now?

ZZ Servers’ clients may be unfamiliar with WannaCry because they weren’t impacted. Why? While the world became aware of the ransomware attack when it first launched on May 12, ZZ Servers had already implemented the appropriate patches across its hosting environment back in March.

Because security is top of mind here, and staying on top of security patches is a matter of course for our business, we were able to protect our clients – and they didn’t even realize it.

No matter where you host, be sure to ask your provider about their security patch processes.

ZZ Servers cares about customers and the success of their businesses, with security baked into our hosted offerings in packages designed to meet a variety of budgets. Contact us to learn more about how we can safely and affordably host your systems.
