Personal Information of Over 129,000 Americold Employees Stolen

Imagine this: you’re running a successful business, and one day, a cyberattack hits your company, compromising the personal information of thousands of your employees and their dependents. This nightmare scenario became a reality for Americold, a cold storage and logistics giant with a global presence.

In April, Americold’s network experienced a breach that affected its operations. The company had to shut down its IT network to contain the damage and rebuild the impacted systems. While the attack disrupted the company’s operations, the most significant impact was the theft of personal information belonging to over 129,000 employees and their dependents.

According to notification letters sent to the affected individuals, the stolen data included names, addresses, Social Security numbers, driver’s license or state ID numbers, passport numbers, financial account information, and employment-related health insurance and medical information.

Cactus Ransomware Group Claims Responsibility

While Americold didn’t initially attribute the breach to a specific ransomware group, the Cactus ransomware operation claimed responsibility for the attack in July. This relatively new group emerged in March and is known for its double-extortion attacks: first, it steals data to use as leverage in ransom negotiations, and then it encrypts the compromised systems.

The Cactus group leaked a 6GB archive of accounting and finance documents allegedly stolen from Americold’s network. They also plan to release additional sensitive information, such as human resources, legal, company audit information, customer documents, and accident reports.

What This Means for Business Owners

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of cybersecurity for businesses of all sizes. The consequences of a cyberattack can be devastating, not just in terms of financial losses, but also in the damage to your company’s reputation and the trust of your employees and customers.

As a business owner, you must prioritize cybersecurity and invest in the necessary tools and resources to protect your company’s data and systems. It’s also crucial to educate your employees about the risks and best practices for safeguarding sensitive information.
