Toyota Alerts Customers: Data Breach Exposes Sensitive Personal and Financial Information

If you’re a Toyota owner, you might want to sit down for this one. Toyota Financial Services (TFS) has recently revealed that they’ve suffered a data breach, and sensitive personal and financial data of their customers has been exposed. TFS is a global subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation and operates in 90% of the markets where Toyota cars are sold. It provides auto financing to its customers.

Last month, the company detected unauthorized access to some of its systems in Europe and Africa. The Medusa ransomware group claimed responsibility for the attack and demanded a whopping $8,000,000 in ransom to delete the stolen data. Toyota was given 10 days to respond to the blackmail. In response, Toyota took certain systems offline to contain the breach, which impacted customer services.

The Data Leak

It seems that Toyota did not negotiate a ransom payment with the cybercriminals, and as a result, all the stolen data has now been leaked on Medusa’s extortion portal on the dark web. The German division, Toyota Kreditbank GmbH, has already admitted that hackers gained access to customers’ personal data.

According to Heise , a German news outlet, the compromised data includes:

  • Full name
  • Residence address
  • Contract information
  • Lease-purchase details
  • IBAN (International Bank Account Number)

This type of data can be used for phishing, social engineering, scams, financial fraud, and even identity theft attempts. The internal investigation is still ongoing, and it’s possible that attackers accessed additional information. Toyota has promised to promptly update affected customers if further data exposure is discovered.
